Rating summary

Turbot in the North Sea is fully fished and harvested sustainably. Few management measures in the North Sea are specifically designed for turbot. Nevertheless, the stock is currently abundant and appears to be harvested sustainably. Although a species-specific TAC was only introduced in 2024, catch limits have been set in line with scientific advice and have effectively controlled fishing mortality. The fishery has a well‑developed and effective Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance (MCS) system with reliable enforcement and low levels of IUU activity. Beam trawls have significant impacts on the seabed. Bycatch can include depleted North Sea cod. There is also bycatch of ETP species – blue skate. Beam trawling may add additional pressure to an ecosystem altered by fishing and climate change.
