Rating summary

There is concern for the biomass, but not fishing pressure of European squid in the Celtic Seas. There are no appropriate management measures in place for European squid in the Celtic Seas. There are no catch limits or minimum sizes, and the limited scientific advice available is not being effectively integrated. However, the fishery has a well‑developed and effective Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance (MCS) system with reliable enforcement and low levels of IUU activity. Otter trawls are likely to cause some damage to the seabed. The squid fishery is likely to overlap with vulnerable zero-catch gadoids in the area. This gear type can also interact with ETP species. While squid landings have declined in this area, otter trawling may continue to exert pressure on an ecosystem already affected by historic fishing and climate change.
