Citizen Science projects
From reporting your wildlife and seaweed sightings to fun-filled family activities at the beach, there are lots of free ways for you to get involved with our work.
Citizen science is a collaborative effort by members of the public to gather and share scientific data that can inform research and inspire change. Anyone can take part in citizen science and many projects are suitable for all ages and abilities.
Citizen science is a key part of our conservation work. We use the data you collect in our citizen science projects to understand the state of our ocean and how it’s changing, allowing us to campaign for scientifically backed solutions and drive change. Without citizen science data, it would be more difficult and costly to determine the success of our efforts and where they should be focussed.
Through citizen science, everyone can play a role in securing a cleaner, healthier, and better-protected ocean - why not get involved?
Seasearch
If you’re a diver or snorkeller – you could help track the health of our ocean by becoming a Seasearch volunteer. Our network around the country record thousands of habitats and species each year.
Beach cleans
Join one of our beach clean surveys and help keep Britain's beaches beautiful and our ocean safe for wildlife.
Dive in: A citizen science series
Citizen science is when people like you work alongside researchers to collect scientific data and contribute to research. Our series of online training sessions tell you everything you need to know about getting involved.
Source to Sea Litter Quest
No matter where you live across the UK, you can help keep our seas clean. Most of the litter that ends up on our beaches or in the sea starts its journey in villages, towns and cities miles from the coast.
Wildlife sightings
We want to hear about the wildlife you spot at the coast and at sea, especially marine turtles and jellyfish in UK and Irish waters.
Big Seaweed Search
Discovering where and how seaweeds grow around the UK can tell us vital information about our climate.
Big Microplastic Survey
Microplastics pose a big threat to marine ecosystems and human health. Alongside the Big Microplastic Survey, we're collecting vital data on microplastic pollution in the UK. You can get involved by heading to the beach and telling us about the microplastics you find there.
