St Abbs Aquarium Beach Clean - Summer 2026
Join this beach clean to help us stop harmful litter from reaching the ocean and collect vital data that we can use to bring about positive change for our seas.
We are collecting beach litter with two aims: to help keep our local beach clean while contributing to MCS's data set and to locate supplies to make art sculptures in a workshop held in St Abbs Aquarium the next day with the fantastic local artist Scapa Joe. Make sure to check the weather beforehand to work out what to bring as there might be rain, shine or a bit of both! We aim to start at 5:30pm so if people could arrive 10/15 minutes earlier to hear our briefing and to get down to the beach that would be fantastic. For those with access to their own gloves and any other litter picking equipment please do bring them along, we will try to supply equipment but resources may be limited. The beach is mostly sandy, but wear sensible shoes as there are some rocky parts to navigate. We can't wait to sea you there!

What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).
What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.
Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.
