ServiceGRN Barry Island Beach Audit - Autumn 2026

Join this beach clean to help us stop harmful litter from reaching the ocean and collect vital data that we can use to bring about positive change for our seas.

Join us for a beach audit at Barry Island following high tide and help gather valuable information about marine litter on our coastline. During the session, we will spend approximately one hour walking along the beach and surveying the areas where debris has been deposited by the receding tide. Participants will work together to identify, record, and, where appropriate, collect plastic waste and other litter found on the beach. Items may include plastic bottles, packaging, fishing-related debris, cigarette butts, cans, glass, and other materials washed ashore or left behind by visitors. No previous experience is required, and guidance will be provided on how to identify and record items. The purpose of the audit is not just to clean the beach but to gather data on the types and quantities of litter present. The information collected will be recorded and reported to help improve understanding of marine pollution and support local and national environmental initiatives. This is a great opportunity to contribute to citizen science, learn more about the impact of marine debris on coastal environments, and help protect the beautiful beaches of Barry Island. We start with a Free Sea Briefing on the Beach and participants should wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for walking on sand and uneven surfaces. Pickers, Gloves and any necessary recording materials will be provided. Duration: Approximately 1 hour Location: Barry Island beach, following high tide at 12:00 Noon Suitable for: Individuals, families, community groups, and anyone interested in protecting the marine environment.
