Join us for a beach audit at Barry Island following high tide and help gather valuable information about marine litter on our coastline. During the session, we will spend approximately one hour walking along the beach and surveying the areas where debris has been deposited by the receding tide. Participants will work together to identify, record, and, where appropriate, collect plastic waste and other litter found on the beach. Items may include plastic bottles, packaging, fishing-related debris, cigarette butts, cans, glass, and other materials washed ashore or left behind by visitors. No previous experience is required, and guidance will be provided on how to identify and record items. The purpose of the audit is not just to clean the beach but to gather data on the types and quantities of litter present. The information collected will be recorded and reported to help improve understanding of marine pollution and support local and national environmental initiatives. This is a great opportunity to contribute to citizen science, learn more about the impact of marine debris on coastal environments, and help protect the beautiful beaches of Barry Island. We start with a Free Sea Briefing on the Beach and participants should wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for walking on sand and uneven surfaces. Pickers, Gloves and any necessary recording materials will be provided. Duration: Approximately 1 hour Location: Barry Island beach, following high tide at 12:00 Noon Suitable for: Individuals, families, community groups, and anyone interested in protecting the marine environment. Pets are very welcome!

Also worth knowing…

What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).

What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.

Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.

Join us on the beach whilst there's still spaces!
