Deposit Return Scheme Fan Club

With bottles and cans littering 96% of surveyed beaches across the UK last year, we are extremely excited for Deposit Return Schemes to start across the UK in October 2027!

We're highlighting organisations and community groups who are also excited for the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) to begin; helping to reduce litter in the environment, increase recycling rates and move us closer to a circular economy.

Have your say:

Growing up in the 60's and 70's it was just part of life getting money back on your empty lemonade bottles! We just need to bring it back as soon as possible!

Marine Conservation Society

"We’ve been campaigning for Deposit Return Schemes across the UK for over a decade and we can’t wait for them to begin in 2027!

"We want to stop bottles and cans littering our beaches, polluting our seas and harming our marine wildlife. Other countries have seen drinks-related litter decrease on their beaches after the Scheme has started and that is why we’re a big fan of DRS!" - Catherine Gemmell, Policy and Advocacy Manager

"Deposit Return has been transformative for reducing litter and increasing recycling rates wherever it has been implemented. I am looking forward to seeing the impact of deposit return in a dramatic reduction in drinks related litter in Scotland's countryside!"

Dr Kat Jones, Director, Action to Protect Rural Scotland

"A deposit return scheme is the next step in our mission to remove litter from our environment. Drinks containers make up more than half of all litter, and every day more than 20 million bottles are ‘lost’ from the recycling loop to litter, landfill or incineration. Through projects like the single-use carrier bag charge, we’ve shown that intervention on litter can clean up our communities and be hugely popular with the public. DRS is going to not only help keep Britain tidy but will change the way we look at packaging – not as something to be thrown away carelessly, but as containing valuable materials that can be used again and again."

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, CEO, Keep Britain Tidy

"We’re delighted to see a Deposit Return Scheme finally taking shape in the UK. This is the kind of nationwide change needed to tackle litter and plastic pollution, while unlocking the wider benefits of prevention and a circular economy. We also welcome the ambition shown by Welsh Government to build reuse into the scheme. By cutting out single-use items and promoting more sustainable choices, it will deliver benefits not only today but for future generations too."

Owen Derbyshire, Chief Executive, Keep Wales Tidy

"Over the last ten years, governments worldwide have shown a growing interest in deposit return systems, introducing new systems or modernising existing ones to boost participation and increase redemption rates. Based on our knowledge of existing and upcoming programmes, we expect that by the end of 2027, more than 70 places around the world—covering approximately 641 million people—will have operational DRS programmes for single-use drinks containers. It’s time for the UK to be part of this movement, and reap the benefits of less litter, higher quality recycling, green jobs and reduced carbon emissions"

Jenni Hume, Global Networks Director, Reloop

The UK’s Deposit Return Scheme has the potential to eradicate over 33% of single-use pollution (litter) on UK public rights of way, almost overnight. This is a no-brainer policy that our community is steadfastly in support of. We can’t wait to see the Scheme come into force in October 2027!
