Overview

Herring sustainability varies substantially, so check labels. North Sea drift-net or MSC-certified pelagic-trawl herring is Best Choice. Avoid herring from the Baltic Sea (West), Irish Sea (South) and southern UK. Herring is available in UK supermarkets, fishmongers and restaurants. It is most commonly sold as smoked herring (kippers), pickled or marinated products (such as rollmops), and canned products.
