Join Marine Soc for the first Beach Litter Survey of the semester.

We will meet outside the SOI (Scottish Oceans Institute) at East sands for 12pm. We will then walk down to East Sands beach together where we will conduct a 1 hour citizen science beach litter survey over 100m, recording the litter we find within this section.

After the hour of surveying, we will then weigh what we have found and Marine Soc will submit the results to the Marine Conservaiton Society UK. These results contirbute towards policy and legislation changes made by the govenrment in favour of our oceans - so please do get involved as ithe data has a big impact! Thanks to the 5p bag charge, which was brought in due to data from surveys like this for MCS UK, there has been a 55% decline in plastic bags found on UK beaches!

We have some tough gloves and litter pickers but please do bring your own if you have them, as well as suitable footwear and outdoor clothing.

Any questions please do not hesitate to contact us either on here, via our instagram or at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing you at the beach for some hands on citizen science that makes an impact!

Also worth knowing…

What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).

What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.

Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.
