Appley beach survey with Planet Aware and Bird Aware Solent
Join this beach clean to help us stop harmful litter from reaching the ocean and collect vital data that we can use to bring about positive change for our seas.
Planet Aware have been doing MCS suveys for some time now and we are excited to be doing this one in Ryde with the addition of our partner Bird Aware Solent. We will be cleaning the beach but also recording the amount and type of litter we find. We will also have time to talk about the birds that we can see along the way, any interesting strand line finds and what we can do to help our Oceans.
Please register on MCS to attend. All children 16 and under must attend with their legal guardian.
Please bring:
protective gloves and litter pickers if you have them ( though we will have equip for the day)
water/suitable layers/boots or trainers ( not flip flops or open toed sandles)
mobile phone ( please download the marine litter to record your findings ) app https://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch-app/ If you don't have this we will have some paper record sheets
please wear a mask if you feel more comfortable doing so
hand sanitiser but we will also have some available
please ensure all people in your group etc are registered
Also worth knowing…
What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).
What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.
Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.
