Princess Yachts are the first luxury yacht manufacturer to officially collaborate with the Marine Conservation Society, helping the charity to support and sustain marine environments for future generations.
First introduced by one of our Sea Champion volunteers, the partnership started with an awareness campaign spearheaded by the production of an illustrated children’s storybook, entitled “Enid & Her Magic Yacht”, which highlights the importance of marine conservation to a new audience with proceeds from its sale going directly to the charity.
The partnership has continued to grow and develop, with Princess making a three-year commitment to fund research at Eddystone Reefs, a well-known rock and lighthouse 12 miles off the coast of South West of England close to the home of the Princess brand in Plymouth. Through this research, the team have been able to show that the seabed beneath Eddystone is showing early signs of recovery after decades of damage by bottom-towed fishing gears. The project uses remotely operated technology by a team from the Marine Conservation Society, the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority, and the University of Exeter.
The latest results show that numbers of sea anemones and cup corals have more than doubled, tube worms quadrupled, and many other species that can now live on the seabed have thrived, providing shelter and food for fish and other marine creatures. The results demonstrate the benefits of the new network of marine protected areas around Britain’s coast and strengthen calls for greater restrictions on bottom-towed gears in sensitive areas.
Princess also sponsored two satellite tags to track turtles, allowing researchers at MCS to better understand the movements and behaviours of green turtles and informs our efforts to protect and conserve regional turtle populations. The work is part of the Turks and Caicos Islands Turtle Project, an initiative that includes several partners including MCS and the TCI Government’s Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR).Back to the list
