Description

A breeding male is stunning, almost dragon-like, with a jagged crest and bright orange and black belly. Otherwise a dark brown yet still-impressive creature.

Unlike frogs and toads, newts lay single eggs, usually hidden away amongst leaves. Only in freshwater.

Location

In and around pools amongst freshwater marshes, sand dunes. South and East Coasts, Merseyside, and Solway and Forth regions.
