Description

Dark red, almost purple, with short fronds that quickly dry with an encrusting of salt when out of water. Plants growing high up the shore can be a pale green colour, like the one in the photograph.

One of the most commonly eaten seaweeds, found in a whole range of prepared foods - its “agar jelly” helps thicken desserts, especially icecream and milkshakes, as well as processed meat and beer!

All around the UK, except sandy east coasts.
