Description

A treat of a bird to see, in azure blue and flaming orange. Usually zips around quickly and low over water, but you may be lucky to see one perched on a branch or post.

A curious thing: it is possible to tell the difference between male and female - males have an all black bill, the lower part of the female’s is orange.

Location

Not a seabird, but many overwinter around estuaries and harbours, downriver from their spring time haunts.
