This September, we’ll be running our 25th Great British Beach Clean event all around the UK and we want to make it as big as it can be.

We’re looking for people like you right now to get organised, choose a beach you love and run a clean-up in September!

We want the 25th Great British Beach Clean to be the biggest and best yet!

Are you up for the challenge?

We’re looking for volunteers who are willing to do quite a lot - who’ll be happy to get in touch with a beach owner to get permission to organise a beach clean, get hold of any equipment they need, give a briefing to a group of volunteers, run the survey and bring people to the beach. We’re looking for people willing to do a bit more than turn up. Can you show your beach some love?

Register here or feel free to get in touch by emailing beachwatch@mcsuk.org, or call 01989 567807.

Why is it important?

We’ve cleaned thousands of UK beaches over the last 24 years. From the Hebrides to Cornwall, Gwynedd to Kent, we’ve recorded just about every bit of rubbish our volunteers have picked up, and used that information to create a sea change for our oceans.

Reducing carrier bag numbers, a movement to stop plastic straws being handed out in their thousands, clearer labelling on wet wipes, and proposed deposit return systems – all have been made to happen thanks to our volunteer beach cleaners.

The time is now

Beach cleans take a while to organise. We’ll be running our 25th Great British Beach Clean event all around the UK, over the weekend of the 14th to the 17th of September. The sooner you can get started, the more chances you’ll run a successful event!

Right now we’re looking for people like you to choose a beach you love and run a clean-up on any day over that weekend.

Find a beach you want to clean, sign up and register it on our online system - and we’ll provide you with all the details you need to get going.

Register here or feel free to get in touch by emailing beachwatch@mcsuk.org, or call 01989 567807.

Help us make the 25th Great British Beach Clean to be the biggest and best yet!

The Great British Beach Clean is just one part of the year-long Waitrose Beach and River Clean-up series. Waitrose is donating £500,000 from its carrier bag funds to MCS this year so that we can put on more clean-ups and mobilise the public in the fight back against the rising tide of plastic litter on our beaches.

Our beach litter and sustainable seafood programmes are also supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Actions you can take

  1. Join a beach clean
  2. Organise a beach clean
  3. Download the Great British Beach Clean Report 2017
  4. Visit the beachwatch website

Did you know?…

Litter has increased by 135% since 1994, with plastics increasing by a staggering 180%

Since the carrier bag charge came in across the UK, the Great British Beach Clean has recorded 40% fewer bags on beaches

It’s estimated that one rubbish truck load of plastic litter enters the ocean every minute

Why not join a beach clean ... or organise one?

To date, our beach clean volunteers have removed 6 million pieces of litter from our beaches and collected marine litter data to support our campaigns for cleaner seas and beaches.
