MCS welcomes a new Chair of Trustees
Date posted: 22 May 2020
We’re delighted to welcome Amanda Nobbs as our new chair of Trustees. Concern for the environment has been a strong theme running through Amanda’s career, which has straddled the charity, public and private sectors. Now she’s focused on helping us ensure our overexploited ocean can recover.
It’s an honour to be joining the Marine Conservation Society at such a pivotal time. The importance of our seas for wellbeing has never mattered more!Amanda Nobbs,
Chair of Trustees
Amanda has always been inspired by the sea. Born on the tiny Pacific Island of Tarawa, the ocean was the backdrop for her early childhood. But she loves the rugged shores and waters of the UK, where she says, she finds the sense of perspective they offer and the beauty of nature uplifting.
Amanda’s CV is impressive. A geographer with a Masters in Conservation, she was Chief Executive of the Council for National Parks, where she successfully campaigned for better legislation and for the South Downs and New Forest to become National Parks. She was appointed by Ministers and the Environment Agency as a conservation member on various committees relating to tourism, waterways, water and environmental protection and has chaired the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee for eight years transforming the way partners worked together and championing more joined up approaches to managing water.
Amanda is currently a Commissioner overseeing electoral arrangements and boundaries in Local Government across England and is a St George’s Leadership Fellow.
Amanda says of her latest role: “It’s an honour to be joining the Marine Conservation Society at such a pivotal time. The importance of our seas for wellbeing has never mattered more. Healthy seas sustain us in so many ways, as a source of food and joy and, not least, through their contribution to the air we breathe and the stability of our climate. “In my role as Chair, I want to ensure that our generation truly can be the one that achieves a step change in restoring the health of our ocean and offer everyone the opportunity to enjoy its great beauty.”
We’re thrilled to welcome Amanda on board and together we’ll be working towards a cleaner, better-protected, healthier ocean.
