Mint Velvet, which has over 30 boutiques in the UK, as well as some overseas outlets, also has a huge online presence. It’s this area of their business that has led them to want to cut down on how much single-use plastic they use in their supply chain which ultimately ends up with their customers.

Established in 2009 by founders Liz Houghton and Lisa Agar Rea, Mint Velvet has grown its’ ‘relaxed glamour’ ethos, both online and in stores to over 40 boutiques and numerous concessions in premium department stores in the UK along with a growing market internationally.

At the heart of the brand is a desire to be as responsible as possible, both ethically and socially. It is this area of their business which has led them to want to cut down on the amount of single-use plastic in their supply chain, which ultimately ends up with their customers.

Katharine Sharp, MCS Corporate Partnerships Manager, says the charity was excited to be approached by Mint Velvet, because recognising the issue of single use plastic is the first step for any retailer to begin making changes: “Online retailers face a real issue. They need customers to receive their product in tip-top condition, but how do they ensure that without using at least some single use plastic? With a recent report suggesting that so called ‘biodegradable’ bags are still intact in the sea after three years, it’s great that companies like Mint Velvet are seeking clarification from our experts as to what to look out for when it comes to packaging jargon.”

Mairead Espey, Mint Velvet’s Corporate Social Responsible Manager says the company has become increasingly aware of the need to reduce the amount of packaging they use and in particular single use plastics: “We’re delighted to be working with MCS. Their staff are passionate about making the oceans healthier and have so much knowledge of the impact that plastic has had on marine life. We‘re hoping to tap into that and look at ways of reducing what we use and sourcing sustainable options and alternatives to our plastic packaging.

“Sourcing responsible packaging can be difficult. Products may appear to be good alternatives, but this is not always the case. We’ll be taking advice from MCS over the term of our partnership, supporting their work for cleaner, safer seas, and making changes that will benefit us, our customers and the oceans going forward.”

Mint Velvet launched an exclusive jewellery piece on June 29th to mark their partnership with MCS - 100% of the profits from the sale of which will be donated to the charity.

The piece called ‘Shell Drop Stud Earing’ (pictured) will be sold without any single-use plastic, which is available here.

Katharine Sharp added: “Mint Velvet are clearly sensitive to the ongoing challenges facing the natural world and we’re pleased that MCS is the first marine charity they have chosen to work with. During our partnership we’ll be taking their staff on beach cleans as well has running presentations showing how their support for us will benefit UK seas and the wider oceans.”
