More protected areas should be created to help keep porpoise safe! Earlier this year many of you took action to achieve better protection for harbour porpoises in Scottish waters. It paid off. The Scottish government has now announced that it will create the largest conservation area in Europe for harbour porpoises! This is fantastic news for these shy and mysterious creatures. This Special Area of Conservation (SAC) has been created in the Inner Hebrides and Minches, an area identified as a key location for these animals. Designation of this site should be the first step in a wider plan to protect the harbour porpoise and more protected sites are needed across the UK. Given the importance of UK waters for this species, we urge decision makers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to consider additional sites for protection. Today the European Commission referred the UK to the Court of Justice of the EU over its failure to protect this species. The UK as a whole has so far formally proposed only one other small site: the Skerries and Causeway Special Area of Conservation in Northern Ireland.
