The Marine Conservation Society is the UK’s leading marine charity. We work to ensure our seas are healthy, pollution free and protected.
We are keen to hear from anyone who believes they have time, skills and experience in the following areas:
- Commercial law
- Governance and regulation
Our seas are under immense pressure: too many fish are being taken out, too much rubbish is being thrown in and too little is being done to protect our precious wildlife. Our vision is for seas full of life where nature flourishes and people thrive.
We’re looking for a new member of our Board of Trustees, to help drive the strategic delivery of our vision for ‘Seas Full of Life – seas and coasts where nature flourishes and people thrive’ and our mission, to make regulatory, cultural and social change for healthy seas and coasts that support abundant marine wildlife, sustainable livelihoods and enjoyment for all.
MCS has delivered key successes for marine conservation. We successfully campaigned for change – and were key in the introduction of carrier bag charges, bans on microbeads in personal care products, the spotlight on ‘non-flushables’. We have also been at the forefront of encouraging the nation to choose sustainable seafood, last year our Good Fish Guide improved the sustainability of the seafood in over 300 million meals. We believe in education and community involvement - with over 27,000 volunteers helping beach cleans around the British Isles, we help and mobilise our volunteers in the largest citizen science data collection programme in UK waters.
Our new Trustee will provide strategic input to our organisation, to help us to achieve even more. Your input and influence will support our team and champion our work, to make a difference to the future of our seas both at home and around the UK’s Overseas Territories. As a legally qualified and experienced member of the Board, you will provide a perspective which will support the good governance of the charity. While charity law experience would be desirable, it is not essential.
We’re a UK charity facing a global challenge in the fight to save our seas. We all can and must join together to improve the health of our ocean – but to do this we need to better understand all of our communities, their connection with the sea and impact upon it. This means we are particularly interested in applications from groups which would allow us to be fully representative of our society, and from those groups which are typically under-represented on boards.
