Celebrating our seas - event report<
Bringing people together that care passionately about our seas is core to what we do here at the Marine Conservation Society.
Bringing people together that care passionately about our seas is core to what we do here at the Marine Conservation Society. On Tuesday, February 21st, we held the first in a series of new events as part of our Ocean Devotion programme, celebrating the amazing and diverse marine life that lives in UK seas. With the generous support of Compass Group UK & Ireland, the event was held at the famous Roux at Parliament Square restaurant; a perfect setting to be joined by Members of Parliament, including the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Life Opportunities, Dr Th├â ®r├â ¿se Coffey MP. A rousing speech from our Chair Hugh Raven set the scene before our key speaker, Dr Th├â ®r├â ¿se Coffey MP ably addressed the audience. We were delighted to hear from Dr Coffey, the Minister responsible for the marine environment, that the government remains committed to third tranche of Marine Conservation Zones in our seas! Following the speeches, and a short film highlighting our Community Voice engagement work, our guests tucked into fabulous seafood canap├â ®s. These were all made sustainably thanks to the insights provided by our Good Fish Guide. There was also an opportunity for guests to show their #oceandevotion by taking part in our photo action. Dr Gemma Harper, Deputy Director for Marine and Chief Social Scientist at the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs, celebrated the importance of our seas for our wellbeing. It was fantastic afternoon, buzzing with ideas and optimism, and we look forward to building upon the inspiration provided by all who joined us.
