Following the latest restrictions, governments across the UK have updated their guidance on volunteering. Volunteering can continue provided you do not need to self-isolate, you follow social distancing guidance and are Covid-secure.
Your safety is of utmost importance to us. Where possible, we are happy for volunteers to run small, private beach cleans with their family or allocated bubble, but please always check and follow national and local guidelines around lock down restrictions, along with the following rules:
To help we have updated all our resources including the health and safety guidelines and Q&A. Please do have a look at these and review the government advice before you start.
If you’ve never run a beach clean or litter survey before we’re happy to help you get started. Please give our team a call on 01989 567807 or email us at Beachwatch@mcsuk.org
To join us on this beach clean, please first register as a volunteer. You will then be able to sign up to this event on this page to let us know that you will be coming.
Thanks for signing up for this beach clean. We will be picking a lot of rubbish off this beach at the northern end of Rhossili Beach so come prepared to be busy.
You need to be aware of the details for this location:-
1. Wear appropriate clothing for windy, wet or very warm weather. The wind is more of a problem than rain but you need to be prepared for both. Shoes or boots are essential. No flip-flops or bare feet.
2. Bring your own food and drink should you wish to stay longer.
3. In persistent or heavy wet weather the roads will be flooded like they were in January 2018 making some of the roads impassable.
4. Car park is at Broughton Farm Caravan car park about a mile beyond Llangennith village. During the summer months there will be an attendant on duty. Tell them you are litter picking at the beach and they will allow you to park for free.
5. There are no facilities like toilets onsite at the beach so make sure everyone in your party goes to the toilet before you leave home.
6. There is a 25 minute walk on soft and steep sand dunes which can prove difficult to walk on at times to get to and off the beach. Also be careful not to trip over tree roots crossing the path.
7. Gloves and rubbish bags are provided. Litter pickers are available if required.
8. Children supervised by an appropriate adult are welcome.
9. Dogs are welcome as long as they are under control and all dog mess is picked up and removed.
10. Mobile networks in the area do not provide a reliable signal.
11. We will start work about an hour after high tide and finish well before the tide comes back in. We meet at the car park at 10.30. We will finish at the beach by about 2pm.
12. We are a small group of dedicated volunteers wanting to clean the beach for the good of the wildlife on land and in the sea. You will be very welcome.
