Following the latest restrictions, governments across the UK have updated their guidance on volunteering. Volunteering can continue provided you do not need to self-isolate, you follow social distancing guidance and are Covid-secure.
Your safety is of utmost importance to us. Where possible, we are happy for volunteers to run small, private beach cleans with their family or allocated bubble, but please always check and follow national and local guidelines around lock down restrictions, along with the following rules:
To help we have updated all our resources including the health and safety guidelines and Q&A. Please do have a look at these and review the government advice before you start.
If you’ve never run a beach clean or litter survey before we’re happy to help you get started. Please give our team a call on 01989 567807 or email us at Beachwatch@mcsuk.org
To join us on this beach clean, please first register as a volunteer. You will then be able to sign up to this event on this page to let us know that you will be coming.
The Marine Conservation Society is running a beach clean and survey with local MSP Angus MacDonald on the West foreshore of Kinneil Local Nature Reserve.
We will be meeting at 10am next to the picnic bench on the West side of the reserve. To get to the meeting point walk from Snab Lane carpark East along the trail til you come to the railway line. Please exercise extreme caution when crossing the line ensuring no trains can be seen or heard when crossing.
Turn left after crossing the railway line and follow the path til you see the beach - the picnic bench will just be up on your right. A map with directions will be sent to all volunteers beforehand.
A briefing and welcome will then be given followed by handing out of equipment and the survey sheets. We will then clean and survey a 100m stretch of beach before coming back together at 11am to weigh the rubbish collected.
From 11-12pm a wider clean up of the area will be done including a nurdle hunt for small plastic pellets.
At 12pm the event will finish and the rubbish and equipment will be taken back to the carpark for Falkirk Council to pick up.
There is a risk assessment attached to this beach which will be available on the day but we recommend you take time to read it before you attend. If anyone under 16 is planning on coming there will be parental and guardian consent forms available to fill in on the day too. If you would like these ahead of the event please get in touch with Catherine on the details below.
If anyone has any questions about the event please do not hesitate to get in touch with Catherine on catherine.gemmell@mcsuk.org or 0131 633 4000.
We look forward to seeing you on the beach to help #STOPThePlasticTide!
