Following the latest restrictions, governments across the UK have updated their guidance on volunteering. Volunteering can continue provided you do not need to self-isolate, you follow social distancing guidance and are Covid-secure.
Your safety is of utmost importance to us. Where possible, we are happy for volunteers to run small, private beach cleans with their family or allocated bubble, but please always check and follow national and local guidelines around lock down restrictions, along with the following rules:
To help we have updated all our resources including the health and safety guidelines and Q&A. Please do have a look at these and review the government advice before you start.
If you’ve never run a beach clean or litter survey before we’re happy to help you get started. Please give our team a call on 01989 567807 or email us at Beachwatch@mcsuk.org

Join us for the September Clacton Beach Clean and help us keep plastic out of the oceans. This event is part of the UK’s Great British Beach Clean, a nationwide beach clean and surveying event!
Meeting location: West Beach promenade, outside the ‘Atlanta Café’ (to the right of the pier when viewed from road)
Clacton Pier location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Clacton+Pier/@51.7866309,1.1532131,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x47d96ccbc9555555:0xdccf644e65ad76f5!8m2!3d51.7864484!4d1.1550048
Registration for this event is helpful so the organiser knows how many volunteers to expect, but it is not essential.
The Beach clean will involve a survey and clean-up of a specified area next to the pier and clean-up of the other beach sections to the right of the pier.
Please wear sturdy footwear. Bring sunglasses, hats, water, sunscreen, warm clothing depending on the weather. Please also bring re-usable strong protective gloves and litter pick tools if possible, some will be available. Re-usable collecting bags will be provided and litter will be sorted into recyclable/non-recyclable waste to get the most benefit from the beach clean.
We will work in pairs as a minimum (pair up on the day if you are coming as an individual). Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult and have a completed Parental Consent form. Toilets and cafes are within 50 metres of meeting point. Public transport and disabled parking is also close by. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at this time of the year. High tides: approx 03:30 and 15:50.
Briefing will start at 9am so please arrive promptly to avoid missing important information.
We really appreciate the time and effort donated by all volunteers and look forward to seeing you on the 21st September!
