Withernsea is an old seaside resort with a new promenade, a famous lighthouse with museum and the Pier Towers which were once the gateway to a long since removed pier. The beach is part of a strip of sand and shingle that stretches for miles in either direction. The are plenty of cafes.


The beach is popular with families. Swimming and paddling are popular activities in Withernsea. Dog walking and fishing are permitted outside the award area. There is a commercial boat launch to the South of the award area which visitors must be aware of.

Wildlife and Walks

The Humber Bridge Country Park Local Reserve is further up the Humber river, where there are serveal trails to explore - the East Riding of Yorkshire Council have more info. South, towards Spurn point, are two fabulous reserves: Kilnsea Wetlands & Spurn NNR.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 15th May to 30th September.

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
