Winchelsea is known locally as simply ‘The beach’. The town which sits behind he beach is a quiet and historic beach town.


Swimming is possible here and enjoy walking along this peaceful beach. Winchelsea is a quiet, big and open beach - a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of busier beaches.

Wildlife and Walks

This is a long beach with some lovely views. Rye Harbour reserve, managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, is behind the beach. There is a wealth of birds and flowers at Rye - from godwits and grebes to teal and tufted ducks. The Wildlife Trust’s website has more information on what to see when.

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
