The Towans, Hayle in St Ives Bay makes up part of a necklace of golden beaches which are bordered by the picturesque fishing town of St Ives to the west and fringed by the dunes of Hayle to the east.


Surfing, swimming and walking are popular but avoid swimming in or near the estuary where there are dangerous currents. The South West Coast Path runs past the beach.

Wildlife and Walks

The beach is served by coastal footpaths which lead to a number of interesting local features and locations. Godrevy Point with its views across to Godrevy Island. Just to the north is Upton Towans, a Wildlife Trust nature reserve.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 15th May to 30th September.

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
