Tintagel is a historic town with a rugged coastline where Tintagel castle lies. Managed by English Heritage, the castle sits on an island linked to shore by a wooden bridge. The small cove, which is next to the island, is difficult to access.

Activities

Paddling and rockpooling are great activities to do here at low tide. There is much to explore in the area especially for those interested in history. With its huge mouth, Merlin’s Cave is just below the castle and by the beach.

Wildlife and Walks

The cove is on the South West Coast Path. Tintagel is half a mile away from the town and nearby beaches such as Trebarwith strand are within walking distance.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
