The safe sheltered bay is flanked by magnificent chalk headlands on either side. The gently sloping sands form a good 2km family beach with a promenade. This part of the beach is further away from the town centre and the Bull and Boat sits just behind the beach.

Popular activities here include: swimming, windsurfing. diving, sailing, sea canoeing, fishing and crazy golf and bowls. There is cycle hire, a diving school and boat trips on offer at the nearby marina.

Wildlife and Walks

The Dorset Coast Path extends in both directions from Swanage Bay, passing through beautiful countryside along this section of coast. The path to the north leads to Handfast Point, providing excellent views of Old Harry Rocks and Poole Bay.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
