Just west of Dover Harbour, this is a long shingle beach set in a bay near Shakespeare Cliff. There are deep pools and a wave cut platform towards the cliff end of the beach.

Fishing is popular here. Enjoy walking along the coast in this stunning part of the UK - walk west and you enter into Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visit Dover Castle to the east of the beach.

Wildlife and Walks

There is a coastal path behind the beach. Set within the Dover-Folkestone Heritage Coast, Samphire Hoe reserve is just south west, its chalky cliffs are home to a host of insects and plants, including over 8,000 early spider orchids.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
