The unique Selsey Bill low headland reaches 3 miles out to sea. The beach extends in both directions from the headland. There are often strong currents around the Bill, bathing past the end of the groyne is not advised.

Swimming is discouraged as there are strong currents around the Bill. Bird watching is popular. Toilets are near the car park. A mobile kiosk provides refreshments. There is a slipway suitable for very small craft and personal watercraft are prohibited.

Wildlife and Walks

There are walks along the sea wall and a pond at the eastern beach. Pagham Harbour to the east is a nature reserve and a refuge for many species of birds, butterflies and plants.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
