Sedgwell Cove is separated from Bantham by the River Avon. Two large beaches are exposed at low tide when it becomes possible to walk to Burgh Island. The beach is increasingly popular with holiday makers.

There’s lots to do here with swimming, surfing, windsurfing and walking all being hugely popular. The local surf school - Discovery Surf School - has equipment for hire.

Wildlife and Walks

Bigbury is on the South Devon Coastal Path, between the rivers Avon and Erme. The route follows the undulating cliff line passing Burgh Island and the beaches of Bigbury and Challaborough.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2018 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
