One of Britain’s most famous seaside towns. Scarborough has excellent choice of amenities and entertainments. South Sands is a large sandy bay with good facilities and popular with families. A handy cliff lift provides easy access.

Activities

There is a bowling green and plenty of amusement arcades. There is a leisure centre nearby. If conditions are right this beach is suited to surfing and body boarding and there are several surf schools in the area.

Wildlife and Walks

Buy an ice-cream and stroll the promenade or explore this traditional seaside town. The harbour and castle are to the north of the beach. There is excellent walking inland as well as along the coast - at Forge Valley Woods - the North York Moors National park website has more information.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
