Today's forecast

Once Portobello was a busy seaside resort where all the people of Edinburgh went to paddle in the sea. Now it still has it’s sandy beach, and plenty of amusements and entertainments, but it is seen more as a peaceful escape from city life.

There is a swimming centre on the beach, a nearby golf course and indoor bowls. There are several amusement arcades on the promenade. Swimming and sunbathing are popular and the beach hosts the annual Big Beach Busk, international volleyball competitions and triathlon events.

Wildlife and Walks

Take in the sea air along the promenade. For walks in the area, see here: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lothian/

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
