Water Quality

Today's forecast

Forecasts are not available for this location.

A privately owned beach with a waterfall and dramatic cliffs, Potheras is an unspoilt little cove, hidden away to the east of the lighthouse on Pendeen Watch. Please be aware that there are bits of shipwreck and metal in the sand. There is a strong undertow and the tides are dangerous here.

Activities

Swimming is not recommended here due to the steep shelving of the beach which creates a strong undertow. Also good for rockpooling at low tide but please be aware of the tide times.

Wildlife and Walks

The beach lies on the South West Coast Path - Pendeeen lighthouse can be reached by heading west. Grey seals pup on the beach and many jellyfish have been recorded here, including the formidable Portuguese man o’ war (not technically a jelly but looks a little like one).

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
