Today's forecast

Forecasts are not available for this location.

Port Erin is situated towards the South Western tip of the Island. The beach is a sandy bay enclosed by rocky headlands and backed by the town.

There is a museum and the bay is popular with water-sports enthusiasts. There is a surf/windsurf shop on the beach and in SW storms there are often good waves for surfing. There is a golf course to the north of the beach.

Wildlife and Walks

There is a coast path leading around the cliffs in either direction. There are two reserves nearby: Dalby Mountain Moorland Nature Reserve and Ballalough Reedbeds Nature Reserve.

What's tested here?

Water samples are taken voluntarily at this beach by Isle of Man Government from 15th May to 15th September.

Water samples do not need to be taken at this beach and may not be treated in the same way as designated bathing waters, but they are collected in the spirit of the Bathing Waters Directive.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
