Today's forecast

Forecasts are not available for this location.

Overstrand is a long, sandy beach, stretching 80-100m from the seawall at low tide and is covered at high tide. This is a quiet beach and for those wanting to escape the busier Cromer (north of Overstrand). The WC is in the small car park and the beach lies on the Norfolk Coast Path.

Activities

Bathing and surfing are popular at Overstrand. A coastal walk starts from the car park here and takes in the Cromer lighthouse. 5 miles north, and a little inland, is the National Trust’s West Runton and Beeston Regis Heath - this is an excellent place for walking and has spectacular coastal views.

Wildlife and Walks

Norfolk AONB and the National Trust’s Blakeney National Nature Reserve, is to the north of the beach, which has a tern colony during the summer months and grey seals breeding in the winter. The Norfolk Broads are south of the beach.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
