Firm sandy beach, 7 miles long and backed by one of the largest sand dune systems in the UK & Ireland. Benone Strand is popular throughout the year and is well used for a range of marine and land based outdoor recreation.


The beach is used for swimming, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, segway tours, sailing, kite buggying, kite surfing, blokarting and jet skiing. Sea angling regularly takes place from the beach. These activities are managed through zoning and the beach has hosted various competitions.

Wildlife and Walks

The beach and dune land fall within the Magilligan ASSI and SAC. It is one ofthe largest dune land systems in the UK and Ireland. Boardwalks provide access through some of the dune land, interpretive signage and leaflets are available on the flora and fauna of the area.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 1st June to 15th September.

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
