A shingle beach just south of Harwich Harbour. There is a cinema close to the beach and places to eat or have a drink in.

Plenty to do in Harwich with seasonal events to attend, a promenade to stroll along and, to the south of the beach, there is the Harwich Maritime Museum and further south are two old forts. The Harwich Town Sailing Club operates here.

Wildlife and Walks

The beach is fairly close to Hemford Water National Nature Reserve which is wonderful for its wildfowl and waders. To the south, a little further away, is the John Weston Nature Reserve, which has lapwing, redshank, sedge & reed warblers and also has some interesting moths and migrant bird species.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
