The beach is just south of Beacon Hill fort, a derelict defense fort facing south east and on the south side of the Orwell Haven - a combined estuary of the rivers Orwell and Stour. Beach huts line the seafront and The Waterfront is further south along the beach for a bite to eat.

Activities

Plenty to do in Harwich with seasonal events, a promenade, museums and old fortifications to explore along the seafront. Water sports are popular - zoning applies.

Wildlife and Walks

Visit nearby Hemford Water National Nature Reserve which is fantastic for its wildfowl and waders. The John Weston Nature Reserve is further south and has lapwing, redshank, sedge & reed warblers and also has interesting moths and migrant bird species.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
