A rural pebbles beach with beach huts and a slipway. The slip is available about two hours either side of high tide. The harbour and Clock Tower are to the east of the beach.

Boating is popular here and there is a rowing and yachting club and angling society based here on the seafront. Stodmarsh, Oare Marshes and Blean Woods reserves are nearby and have some wonderful wildlife.

Wildlife and Walks

Herne Bay Downs is east of the beach - a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Ramsar site and a Special Protection Area for Birds. Sparrowhawks are regular visitors here. Visit the Reculver Visitor Centre (Kent Wildlife Trust) and explore the Country Park (east, beyond the Downs).

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
