A popular destination for sand yachting. Of historical interest - visit the Sound Mirrors just behind the beach, built by Percy Rothwell between 1927-30 as part of Britain’s defence strategy, they were designed to pick up the sound of approaching enemy aircraft.

Wildlife and Walks

The long beach stretches south to Dungeness point and north to Romney. Dungeness National Nature Reserve is nearby. The RSPB manage large parts of the reserve. From warblers and wagtails, hobbies and harriers through to smew and goldeneye in winter - the RSPB’s website has more info on star species.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
