Kirk Michael is a small village to the North of Peel on the remote North-East coast of the Island. The beach forms part of a very long stretch of shingle and sand.

Walking and fishing.

Wildlife and Walks

There are a number of marked walks in the area and a coastal path. The Cooildarry Nature Reserve is very close to the beach. Plants at the reserve include ferns, horsetails and there are mosses and over fifty species of fungi. In the spring look out for bluebells, primroses and wild garlic.

What's tested here?

Water samples are taken voluntarily at this beach by Isle of Man Government from 15th May to 15th September.

Water samples do not need to be taken at this beach and may not be treated in the same way as designated bathing waters, but they are collected in the spirit of the Bathing Waters Directive.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
