A long sandy beach set in a wide bay. In town, the beach is edged with a historical promenade and beach chalets. Nearby to the north, Filey Brigg has some good rock pools to explore.


A popular spot for sailing and windsurfing as well as surfing when the waves are right.

Wildlife and Walks

Enjoy wonderful views along the coast path and south, heading towards Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast, is the RSPBs Bempton Cliffs Reserve, where you might spot: gannets, Kittiwakes, puffins, short-eared owl & tree sparrows - the RSPBs site have more information.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 15th May to 30th September.

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
