A picturesque pebble beach surrounded by woodland with calm sheltered waters. The beach is within Torbay which has Global Geopark status and is an SSSI - some of its special features are limestone grasslands, rare plants and lichens.

A quiet beach with fantastic views. There is a Water skiing lane here - swimmers please avoid this! In a corner of the beach are the remains of Lord Churston’s bathhouse, an 18th century ruin, which looks out across Torbay.

Wildlife and Walks

The South West Coast Path runs past the beach to Berry Head (south) and Hopes Nose (north), where there are unique geological features. Look out for Guillemots - the sea cliffs in Torbay have the largest colony found along the south coast of England.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
