A typical south coast shelving shingle beach with groynes and where the waves have a tendency to ‘dump’ at high tide. At low tide it is sandy with extensive shallows. The village of East Wittering has several shops, cafes restaurants and a couple of public houses. Scotts farm campsite is 10 minutes walk.

Activities

Bathing and watersports are popular.

Wildlife and Walks

Look out for seals! Walk to East Head, managed by the National Trust. East Head is a popular site for bird watchers especially during the winter months when the whole area is teeming with over-wintering migrants. The sand dunes and the salt marsh are rare habitats.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
