Cuckmere Haven is on the south coast, the coastline is dominated by cliffs which are constantly changing due to an erosion rate of 30-40 cms every year. The pebble beach is very quiet and secluded.

At the Severn Sisters Country Park Visitor Centre there is information, a shop, exhibitions and displays and enjoy a bite to eat at Exceat Farmhouse Restaurant, which is open throughout the year. The Vanguard Way walk runs through Cuckmere Valley and the South Downs Way is not far away.

Wildlife and Walks

Walk from the Severn Sisters Country Park Visitor Centre, an 18th century barn, down to the beach through the Cuckmere Valley. The Valley is managed by the National Trust, an area of chalk grassland and a wonderful spot for butterflies.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
