Famous for the Clacton pier, built in 1877, Clacton’s sandy beach now attracts families to its huge range of traditional seaside entertainments.


Swimming is popular or try your hand at one of the following water sports - canoeing, windsurfing or sailing. There is an aquarium, side stalls, amusement arcades and rides.

Wildlife and Walks

Great Holland Pits Nature Reserve is north of the beach - a former gravel pit, which has many plants and birds including Nightingale, kingfisher, Coot, Little Grebe, Woodcock and Long eared Owls - Essex Wildlife Trust have more information. Hamford Water National Nature Reserve is further north.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 15th May to 30th September.

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
