Mudeford Quay is situated at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour and provides spectacular views out to sea and back to Christchurch town. At The Quay Head, there is a cluster of historic buildings and ferries leave from here to Mudeford Sandbank. Public toilets are located on the Quay Head.

Boating and windsurfing are popular here. Not suitable for bathing due to its proximity to the fast flowing “Run” and main harbour channel. The large grassed area, which overlooks the Harbour, is perfect for a picnic and there is a children’s play area next to this.

Wildlife and Walks

Sometimes seals, porpoises or dolphins can be spotted in the water. Hengistbury Head and Christchurch Harbour (SSSIs) are renowned for their wildlife. On the Head purple emperor butterflies can occasionally be seen.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
