Bournemouth Pier has a long sandy beach. Popular South coast resort catering for a wide variety of visitors with shops, cafes, amusement arcades, children’s rides and the Oceanarium. Regular firework and night time family festivals take place throughout the summer holidays.


Activities here include: swimming, sailing, fishing, surfing, canoeing, jet skiing, windsurfing and water skiing - zoning applies. Boat tips available and activities for children across the seafront. There is an Amusement Arcade close to the pier and a number of cafe’s and restaurants at the beach.

Wildlife and Walks

The cliffs have been designated as SSSI’s and provide a home to protected species such as the sand lizard. The Oceanarium at Bournemouth also provides educational talks with a wide variety of marine species on display.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 15th May to 30th September.

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.

Public car parks available adjacent to the seafront in Bournemouth. A small number of disabled spaces are available on the seafront to the East of Bournemouth Pier.

Dog restrictions


Dogs not allowed between May 1st and September 31st. Dog exercise areas during these months available in other areas.

Beach cleaning

Daily beach cleans during the summer and weekly during the winter.
