A sloping sandy beach, much loved by families. A wide range of seafront activities are available including: windsurfing, surfing, canoeing and there are beach volleyball courts.

Activities

A popular spot forbathing and sea kayaking. The pier, gardens and Overstrand building have all been refurbished, with a variety of restaurants, shops and cafes available. Kids play area in Chine Gardens.

Wildlife and Walks

The cliff tops along Bournemouth’s coastline are designated SSSI’s and are home to a number of rare species including the sand lizard. The Chine Gardens also contain a nature trail.

Water samples are taken at this designated bathing water by the Environment Agency, during the bathing season, 15th May to 30th September.

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.

Pay parking on the seafront between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers and pay parking on the overcliff.

Dog restrictions

 

Dogs not allowed between May 1st and September 31st. Dog exercise areas during these months available in other areas.
