Today's forecast

Forecasts are not available for this location.

This sandy beach, stretching along a straight part of the coast for 2 km, is backed by low clay cliffs. It’s used by tourists and residents. Due to coastal erosion there are access issues at this beach.

Activities

The main beach activity is fishing. There is no zoning for water sports activities.

Wildlife and Walks

Many seabirds can be sighted whilst taking walks along the beach. Snakeholm Pastures, managed by Yorkshire WT, is west of the beach. Some spectacular reserves are to the north, towards Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast, including: Yorkshire WTs Flamborough Cliffs & RSPBs Bempton Cliffs.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2017 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
